Research advancements in the maintenance mechanism of Sporidiobolus pararoseus enhancing the quality of soy sauce during fermentation.

Abstract
Soy sauce is a traditional condiment that undergoes microbial fermentation of various ingredients to achieve its desired color, scent, and flavor. Sporidiobolus pararoseus, which is a type of Rhodocerevisiae, shows promising potential as a source of lipids, carotenoids, and enzymes that can enrich the taste and color of soy sauce. However, there is currently a lack of systematic and comprehensive studies on the functions and mechanisms of action of S. pararoseus during soy sauce fermentation. In this review, it is well established that S. pararoseus produces lipids that are abundant in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid, as well as various carotenoids, such as β-carotene, torulene, and torularhodin. These pigments are synthesized through the mevalonic acid pathway and possess remarkable antioxidant properties, acting as natural colorants. The synthesis of carotenoids is stimulated by high salt concentrations, which induces oxidative stress caused by NaCl. This stress further activates crucial enzymes involved in carotenoid production, ultimately leading to pigment formation. Moreover, S. pararoseus can produce high-quality enzymes that aid in the efficient utilization of soy sauce substrates during fermentation. Furthermore, this review focused on the impact of S. pararoseus on the color and quality of soy sauce and comprehensively analyzed its characteristics and ingredients. Thus, this review serves as a basis for screening high-quality oleaginous red yeast strains and improving the quality of industrial soy sauce production through the wide application of S. pararoseus.

Proteome-wide profiling reveals dysregulated molecular features and accelerated aging in osteoporosis: A 9.8-year prospective study.

Abstract
The role of circulatory proteomics in osteoporosis is unclear. Proteome-wide profiling holds the potential to offer mechanistic insights into osteoporosis. Serum proteome with 413 proteins was profiled by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) at baseline, and the 2nd, and 3rd follow-ups (7704 person-tests) in the prospective Chinese cohorts with 9.8 follow-up years: discovery cohort (n = 1785) and internal validation cohort (n = 1630). Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at follow-ups 1 through 3 at lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN). We used the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) to identify the osteoporosis (OP)-related proteomic features. The relationships between serum proteins and BMD in the two cohorts were estimated by linear mixed-effects model (LMM). Meta-analysis was then performed to explore the combined associations. We identified 53 proteins associated with osteoporosis using LightGBM, and a meta-analysis showed that 22 of these proteins illuminated a significant correlation with BMD (p < 0.05). The most common proteins among them were PHLD, SAMP, PEDF, HPTR, APOA1, SHBG, CO6, A2MG, CBPN, RAIN APOD, and THBG. The identified proteins were used to generate the biological age (BA) of bone. Each 1 SD-year increase in KDM-Proage was associated with higher risk of LS-OP (hazard ratio [HR], 1.25; 95% CI, 1.14-1.36, p = 4.96 × 10-06 ), and FN-OP (HR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.02-1.23, p = 9.71 × 10-03 ). The findings uncovered that the apolipoproteins, zymoproteins, complements, and binding proteins presented new mechanistic insights into osteoporosis. Serum proteomics could be a crucial indicator for evaluating bone aging.

The relationship between depression based on patient health questionaire-9 and cardiovascular mortality in patients with hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression and hypertension are increasingly prevalent in the U.S., with evidence suggesting significant comorbidity. Despite this, the specific relationship within the U.S. hypertensive population is underexplored. Our study investigates this link using data from the 2007-2014 NHANES database and mortality data from the National Death Index. METHODS A total of 8677 participants were included in this cohort study. Depression diagnosis was made based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Hypertension was defined either through a self-reported previous diagnosis, current antihypertensive medication use, or blood pressure exceeding standard thresholds. Cardiovascular disease mortality was determined by mortality recorded with National Death Index on December 31, 2019. The cox proportional hazards regression method was applied to analyze the association of depression with cardiovascular mortality in hypertension. RESULTS During an average follow-up of 8.2 years, 599 deaths were confirmed from cardiovascular disease. The association of depression with cardiovascular mortality in hypertension was significantly positive (HR, 1.0263(95%CI = 1.0033, 1.0498), p = 0.0247). In addition, the risk of cardiovascular mortality increased gradually with the severity of depressive symptoms (p for trend =0.0259). This positive relationship was basically stable in different subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses. LIMITATIONS The observational design of our study hinders establishment of a causal relationship. Potential bias due to subjective reporting and the absence of depression treatment data represent limitations, although their impact on the conclusions is deemed minimal. CONCLUSIONS Depression is associated with cardiovascular mortality risk in patients with hypertension. The worsening depressive symptoms, the higher risk of cardiovascular mortality.

Reactive oxygen species signaling in melatonin-mediated plant stress response.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are crucial signaling molecules in plants that play multifarious roles in prompt response to environmental stimuli. Despite the classical thoughts that ROS are toxic when accumulate in excess, recent advances in plant ROS signaling biology reveal that ROS participate in biotic and abiotic stress perception, signal integration, and stress-response network activation, hence contributing to plant defense and stress tolerance. ROS production, scavenging and transport are fine-tuned by plant hormones and stress-response signaling pathways. Crucially, the emerging plant hormone melatonin attenuates excessive ROS accumulation under stress, whereas ROS signaling mediates melatonin-induced plant developmental response and stress tolerance. In particular, RESPIRATORY BURST OXIDASE HOMOLOG (RBOH) proteins responsible for apoplastic ROS generation act downstream of melatonin to mediate stress response. In this review, we discuss promising developments in plant ROS signaling and how ROS might mediate melatonin-induced plant resilience to environmental stress.

Age differences in the association of body mass index-defined obesity with abdominal aortic calcification.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In cardiovascular disease, previous studies have suggested young age as one of the reasons to explain the obesity paradox. This study attempts to provide a different opinion on this claim through unexpected findings. METHODS We used a cross-sectional analysis of the US nationally representative data, total of 10,175 participants were recruited in 2013-2014 from NHANES. A total of 947 participants were selected to be included in this study through inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria for statistical analysis of the relationship between obesity and abdominal aortic calcification(AAC). Smooth curve fitting and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of obesity with AAC after adjusting for age, gender and associated variates. RESULTS Depending on the age of the population, the relationship between obesity and AAC showed the different outcome. Obesity was associated with the lower risk of AAC among individuals older than 52 years of age. According to the difference of adjusted covariates, the AAC scores in the obesity group decreased by 0.92, 0.87, and 1.11 for 52 years old or older individuals. In particular, the risk of AAC was lower for patients with obesity with the following characteristics: male, low LDL, low triglyceride, DM, non-cancer patient, smoking, drinking, vigorous work activity, low annual household income, education of 9 - 11th grades and non-Hispanic white. CONCLUSIONS In US, adults aged 52 years or older, obesity was associated with decreased AAC risk. Older age may be one potential reason for the obesity paradox.

Lipid goal attainment in diabetes mellitus patients after acute coronary syndrome: a subanalysis of Dyslipidemia International Study II-China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipid management with a low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal of < 1.4 mmol/L is recommended for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) due to a high risk for adverse cardiovascular events. This study evaluated the lipid-lowering treatment (LLT) pattern and the LDL-C goal attainment rate in this special population. METHODS DM patients were screened from the observational Dyslipidemia International Study II-China study which assessed LDL-C goal attainment in Chinese ACS patients. The baseline characteristics between the LLT and no pre-LLT groups were compared. The proportions of patients obtaining LDL-C goal at admission and at 6-months, the difference from the goal, and the pattern of the LLT regimen were analyzed. RESULTS Totally 252 eligible patients were included, with 28.6% taking LLT at admission. Patients in the LLT group were older, had a lower percentage of myocardial infarction, and had decreased levels of LDL-C and total cholesterol compared to those in the no pre-LLT group at baseline. The overall LDL-C goal attainment rate was 7.5% at admission and increased to 30.2% at 6 months. The mean difference between the actual LDL-C value and LDL-C goal value dropped from 1.27 mmol/L at baseline to 0.80 mmol/L at 6 months. At 6 months, 91.4% of the patients received statin monotherapy, and only 6.9% received a combination of statin and ezetimibe. The atorvastatin-equivalent daily statin dosage was moderate during the study period. CONCLUSION The low rate of lipid goal attainment observed was in line with the outcomes of other DYSIS-China studies.

Follicle-stimulating hormone is negatively associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a Chinese elderly population: a retrospective observational study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have explored the connection between follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the impact of FSH elevation on NAFLD remains a topic of debate. Hence, this investigation aimed to evaluate the potential correlation between FSH levels and NAFLD in the aging population. METHODS This was a retrospective observational cross-sectional study between July 2017 and August 2018 in our hospital. We used data obtained from 455 patients over 60 years old. Anthropometrics and laboratory tests were performed for each patient. NAFLD was diagnosed by sonographic features and the fatty liver index (LFI). RESULTS Of the 455 patients, 200 (43.96%) had NAFLD on their ultrasound and 169 (37.14%) had NAFLD according to the LFI. An intraclass correlation coefficient of the two methods was 80.4% (P < 0.001). People with NAFLD on their ultrasound showed lower FSH levels (52.68 vs. 61.39 IU/L) and more unfavorable metabolic profiles. FSH was negatively correlated with age, alanine aminotransferase, estradiol, testosterone, systolic blood pressure, waist, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, postload plasma glucose and positive associated with total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol by Spearman correlation analysis (all P < 0.05). By controlling for all confounding factors, the odds ratios (OR) of FSH for NAFLD were determined in elderly individuals, both men and women, aged 60-70 years and over 70 years. These ORs were found to be 0.937, 0.982, 0.983, and 0.973, respectively, with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 0.892-0.984 (P = 0.009), 0.971-0.993 (P = 0.002), 0.967-0.999 (P = 0.033), and 0.958-0.989 (P = 0.001). In addition, our findings demonstrated no significant correlation between FSH and advanced fibrosis when adjusting for potential covariates. The OR for advanced fibrosis was 0.979 (95% CI, 0.938-1.022, P = 0.339). Additionally, ROC curve analysis showed an optimal cut-off value of 66.91 for women and 15.25 for men for NAFLD diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS There was an inverse relationship observed between levels of FSH in the blood serum and NAFLD in the elderly population. These findings suggest that reduced FSH levels might serve as a potential risk factor or biomarker for NAFLD in the elderly.

MRAs may have lost their cornerstone position for heart failure treatment in the age of SGLT-2 inhibitors: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are a cornerstone drug class for heart failure therapy. Several clinical studies have demonstrated its role in heart failure therapy. However, due to the recommendation of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors for the treatment of heart failure, there is a lack of sufficient evidence regarding whether MRAs can continue to play a cornerstone role in heart failure treatment. A meta-analysis was performed on subgroups of the DAPA-HF and EMPEROR-Reduced trials. Using trial-level data, we performed a meta-analysis to assess the effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors and MRAs on various clinical endpoints of heart failure. The incidence of cardiovascular-related death or heart failure hospitalization was the primary outcome. In addition, we assessed cardiovascular death, all-cause death, heart failure hospitalization, renal outcomes, and hyperkalemia. This study has already been registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022385023. Compared with SGLT-2 inhibitor monotherapy, combined treatment did not demonstrate more significant advantages in terms of heart failure or cardiovascular death (RR = 1.00; 95% CI: 0.78-1.28), cardiovascular death (RR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.61-1.52), heart failure hospitalization (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.79-1.07), all-cause death (RR = 1.00; 95% CI: 0.63-1.59) and composite kidney endpoint (RR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.49-1.46). Moreover, in comparison to SGLT-2 inhibitors, combined therapy increased the risk of moderate-severe hyperkalemia (blood potassium > 6.0 mmol/l) (RR = 4.13; 95% CI: 2.23-7.65). In patients with HFrEF who have started MRAs treatment, the addition of an SGLT-2 inhibitor provides significant clinical benefit. However, the addition of MRAs to SGLT-2 inhibitors to treat heart failure is not essential.

Abstract
Cancer is the most serious problem for public health. Traditional treatments often come with unavoidable side effects. Therefore, the therapeutic effects of natural products with wide sources and low toxicity are attracting more and more attention. Polysaccharides have been shown to have cancer-fighting potential, but the molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway has become an attractive target of antitumor therapy research in recent years. The regulation of mTOR pathway not only affects cell proliferation and growth but also has an important effect in tumor metabolism. Recent studies indicate that dietary polysaccharides play a vital role in cancer prevention and treatment by regulating mTOR pathway. Here, the progress in targeting mTOR signaling by dietary polysaccharides in cancer prevention and their molecular mechanisms are systemically summarized. It will promote the understanding of the anticancer effects of polysaccharides and provide reference to investigators of this cutting edge field.

The Effect of Catgut Embedding at Acupoints Versus Nonacupoints in Abdominal Obesity: Protocol for a Multicenter, Double-Blind, 16-Week Randomized Controlled Trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is an increasing problem worldwide. The effective treatments for obesity mainly include diet, physical activity, behavioral intervention, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery, which all have certain limitations. As a specific type of acupuncture therapy, acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) has gained substantial attention in the management of obesity in recent years. Previous studies suggested that ACE may be an effective obesity treatment. However, the evidence for the efficacy of ACE in abdominal obesity (AO) remains inadequate due to the paucity of high-quality studies. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the difference in the effectiveness of catgut embedding at acupoints and catgut embedding at nonacupoints in patients with AO and to further validate the efficacy and safety of ACE for AO. METHODS This is a multicenter, double-blind, 16-week randomized controlled trial. A total of 92 eligible participants with AO will be randomly divided into 2 groups (1:1 allocation ratio). The ACE group will receive catgut embedding at acupoints and the control group will receive catgut embedding at nonacupoints. The intervention will be performed every 2 weeks for a total of 6 sessions. Follow-up will be performed every 2 weeks for a total of 2 visits. The primary outcome is waist circumference. Secondary outcomes include body weight, BMI, hip circumference, and the visual analog scale of appetite. Upon the completion of the trial, we will evaluate the effect of catgut embedding at acupoints or nonacupoints on obesity indicators in patients with AO. For treatment outcomes, an intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. RESULTS The start of recruitment began in August 2019 and is expected to end in September 2023. CONCLUSIONS Although studies have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of ACE in the treatment of obesity, the evidence for the efficacy of ACE in AO remains insufficient due to the quality of the studies. This rigorous normative randomized controlled trial will verify the effect of catgut embedding at acupoints or nonacupoints in patients with AO. The findings will provide credible evidence as to whether ACE is an effective and safe treatment for AO.
